San Angel
SAN ÁNGEL
Its original Nahuatl name is “Tenanitla”, which means “upon the stone wall”. During the Colony, here Carmelite and Dominican monks settled in the Carmen and San Jacinto convents. Its orchards and warm climate attracted the 18th century’s high society, who built here their country houses and haciendas. In the 1820s, many factories were built, that made San Ángel grow, but its charm and ambiance were never lost, thus attracting artists and intellectuals. Its picturesque cobbled streets are ideal to stroll.
CHIMALISTAC
“Chimalli-Itzac” (place of the white shield, in Nahuatl). Old orchard of the 17th century Carmelite convent. Peaceful, cobbled streets colonial borough, linking San Ángel and Coyoacán townships.
